[LIVE REPORT] 2020.02.04 ANNALYNN「JAPAN TOUR 2020」~EXTRA SHOW~ @ HATSUDAI WALL, TOKYO (JP)

The best Metalcore band from Thailand, ANNALYNN, first came to Japan as part of CRYSTAL LAKE‘s event「TRUE NORTH FESTIVAL」in 2017, October 21st. They performed as a support act of the UK Metal band WHILE SHE SLEEPS for a one-night show in Tokyo at Daikanyama UNIT on 2019, January 22nd shortly before releasing their first Major EP「DECEIVER / BELIEVER」(Japan Edition) on 2019, March 6th. As a result, no later than one year following the event, It’s this time to join the「BLARE FEST 2020」hosted by COLDRAIN in Nagoya that ANNALYNN ensured another trip to Japan for the fourth consecutive year.

The band didn’t want to settle for only one appearance and we were extremely lucky to notice an EXTRA SHOW in Tokyo and their participation as Special Guest in the「HYPERDAZE JAPAN TOUR 2020」of the Australian Metalcore band VOID OF VISION which took place at the same venue in Tokyo, continuing through Nagoya one more time, Osaka and ending by Okayama.

No fewer than 3 bands followed one another with mastery on the single stage as support act tonight, GRAUPEL, winner of the CRYSTAL LAKE’s Live Audition「The Road To The True North 2017」, as well as BEYONDGHOSTS and Area/45. The ambitious performance is now over, and at 21:10 the floor turned dark again, the appearance of ANNALYNN.

One knee to the ground, head down and slightly curved body, as well as the fascinating expression on the face of BON, the frontman, that is different from the warm expression he shows off-stage, reflects the atmosphere surrounding the opening of the set on the Intro followed by the song「4s FUZE」.

ANNALYNN is now attempting to raise the temperature with「WELCOME TO THE CREW」, released on 2019, January 25th. The venue is transformed into a private party. Warning code: RED! It has the feel of a good old mixtape with a mix and match of hip hop, electronic beats and metalcore.

They play their songs impeccably in front of an attentive public whose part of the intended audience is still a little shy about discovering the band maybe for the first time.

« We are ANNALYNN from Bangkok, Thailand. TOKYO, show me what you got! », incites BON while catching his breath before to go on the rampage again.

We’re all seeing red with「FINISH HIM」which is the first song from their latest release「DECEIVER / BELIEVER」. They continue to challenge the audience through an ultimate combo of combative noise and provocative lyrics, « Come face me, come fuckin’ test me, I am your misery ».

A loud dissonance swallows the floor and flows into the following song「10 DIMES」in a good tempo in order to the title song「DECEIVER / BELIEVER」.

Initially, the song「10 DIMES」refers to Frank Sinatra (American singer, actor and producer) who was buried with 10 dimes in his pocket. The story is that his son, Frank Sinatra Jr., was kidnapped and all communication with the kidnappers had to be done only by payphone, which prompted Frank Sinatra Sr. to always carry 10 dimes in his pocket in order to make phone calls. This is the reason why we can hear the noise of the coin in the payphone at the beginning of the song and the sound of the phone line before hanging up at the end.

Another sign of ANNALYNN‘s revolutionary technical approach to music is the reference to R2-D2, the most famous robot from the saga Star Wars, that expresses itself in an electronic sound language resembling beeps and whistles, reminding the new elements incorporated into the guitar-playing.

All this leads us to「DECEIVER / BELIEVER」which is seen as a turning point in the band’s history. This is quite a personal song, as BON explained previously, the heart on his sleeve, he is not scared to show his feelings and emotions. The belief through his misadventures appears to him as a deceiver and sounds the falseness of the Almighty’s words. « Stop believing in god », it’s considered to be the only way to survive. After all, to decide how to end one’s life should be the ultimate human right.

They go straight to「I AM UNBROKEN」which is pretty much along the same lines as the previous song. The personal experience with hard times can be clearly felt. « Welcome the hard times ’til I’m cold and pale », that call of total self-sacrifice of being shaken up emotionally and fighting alone until the death. BON states his determination not to believe in any god and spits out his hatred to set him free, « GOD FREE. I’m not afraid of you, I AM UNBROKEN ».

The perfect combinaison and complementarity of both guitarists, BOSS (8-string guitar) and POB (9 string-guitar), contributes to the consolidation of sounds possibilities through the multi-effects pedals and processors used to create that preset.

The audience, who initially looked a bit away from the band, begins to sway into the evil and crazy grooves of a multi-string band and BON’s vocal technique reminiscent of EMMURE. This sound is addictive.

Following the BON’s roar calling « Are You Fxxxkin Ready? », the energy is released in the form of seismic waves on the middle tempo song「F.E.A.R.」from the latest work, followed by「SELF RAISED, SELF MADE」from the previous work「STARE DOWN THE UNDEFEATED」which causes the ground to shake.

「F.E.A.R.」(False Experience Appearing Real) Fiction versus Reality. In keeping with「DECEIVER / BELIEVER」, there is a very complex and sensitive issue because it deals with cultural and religious beliefs. We all want to know how to stand firm under mental and life pressure to which we are subjected in order to make the right decisions. It’s a form of machination and instrumentalisation of human beings. « You’re the product of our negativity, you’re my F.E.A.R., the greatest fictional character we’ve ever created ».

The audience responds to BON’s grateful words, « I’m glad to perform in Tokyo tonight. I seriously can’t express what I’m feeling right now. You are incredible, so please make some noise for yourself! Thanks to everyone who is supporting us, thank you so much! », and the floor seems to be getting warmer little by little.

The live is now in the middle of the early stage, but BON’s strong vocals are never buried in the sound pressure that overwhelms the viewer.

The show goes on with「SELF RAISED, SELF MADE」. The idea and the feeling that your life belongs to you is something that nothing and nobody can dispute. BON’s non-adherence to a belief helps him to develop the strength and ability to repair himself. I have made myself free from all, so that I can save myself, it might be the hidden message behind the lyrics.

While being guided by BON’s words, « I wanna see everybody down! And jump! », the rhythm squad sounds the alarm with「THE SIGNAL FLARES」that blows fire on the floor without a break. ALEX uses a 5-string bass to create a powerful groove that fills up the bottom of the drum by MONG.

After thanking the audience again for the very warm welcome on their third visit to Japan, ANNALYNN is about to end the show with their latest release「HOLY GRAVITY」which is without any doubt a notch above everything.

ANNALYNN seems to have conquered the hearts of an audience who is asking for « one more song ». This time again, the band responds positively to the request introducing「DEAD WEIGHT」as last chance to make this show a success and memorable night for everyone involved.

One of the highlights of this day’s show is the sound quality. ANNALYNN had a staggeringly balance from begenning to end. It may be natural that the Live engineer of the night is also in charge of ANNALYNN‘s albums mixing, Drof, but it’s definitely ANNALYNN that produced the best sound tonight.

ANNALYNN was finally able to prove what they are capable of through a long set with all eleven songs and realized that they are a band with high abilities as an instigator. Thailand’s leading Metalcore band has performed an impressive performance. It goes without saying that the band was generously applauded by a delighted audience.

BOSS (Gt.), who recently joined, has proven to be a major and real asset for the band, thanks to whom ANNALYNN was finally able to increase the level of its music production with new creative abilities and to explore its potential and full capabilities.

The artist’s masterful handling of scenic art, BON’s real rage and the breathtaking spectacle by the rhythm squad probably left a strong impression on the audience facing a band united in its diversity.

Everything was there in ANNALYNN‘s music and the electronic beats, beautiful melodies and new elements brought out the full richness of it all. There is no doubt that ANNALYNN‘s upcoming album will be a masterpiece with a significant impact on the Metal scene.

Althought Japan seems to be perceived as a goal for any Metalcore band in the world, year after year, ANNALYNN never ceases to attract new listeners and started to settle in the Land of the Rising Sun, like a second home.

[INTERVIEW] ANNALYNN Metalcore band from Thailand 1st Major EP「Deceiver / Believer」by NM Mag Japan March 2019

Following their first visit to Japan at the CRYSTAL LAKE‘s event「TRUE NORTH FESTIVAL 2017 ‘」, the metalcore band from Thailand ANNALYNN will go back to Japan for the second time as a support act for While She Sleeps on 1/22 at Daikanyama UNIT, Tokyo. The band will release a Japanese version of their first major EP「Deceiver / Believer」 released from Warner Music in Thailand on BAKU-ON.fb/RADTONE MUSIC on 3/6. Before the day’s Live, we interviewed the members in the dressing room at the venue.

Bon (Vocals) Boss (Guitars) Pob (Guitars) Eak -AREX- (Bass) Mong (Drums)

« Okay, let’s do what we like without paying any heed to this concern! Let’s make a very deep and low sound! »

NM Mag: Thank you for tonight.
BON (Vo.): First of all, we apologize for our poor English.
MONG (Dr.): My English is terrible.
BOSS (Gt.): Everyone is terrible (laughs).

NM Mag: (Laughs). I don’t think so.
POB (Gt.): I only studied at school.
BON: But I’m trying my best to speak because English is an international language for communicating with people from different countries.

NM Mag: You came to Japan this time as part of your Asian Tour, right?
BON: Yeah, this Asian Tour was supposed to be done from Manila to Hong Kong, then to go through Taipei and Tokyo, but the tour started in Hong Kong because the Manila show was canceled.

NM Mag: This is your second visit to Japan, but when you first came to Japan, you performed at the CRYSTAL LAKE「TRUE NORTH FESTIVAL」held in October 2017 and at the Shinjuku Antiknock event.
BON: I had a hard time communicating with the audience when I first came to Japan, but I enjoyed the show very much. I think the show tonight will be even better.

NM Mag: Let me ask you basic questions. When was ANNALYNN formed?
BON:
I started the band’s activities in 2003 when I was a university student. I and AREX (Ba.) grew up in the same area and attended the same university.
MONG: I auditioned 10 years ago and joined ANNALYNN.
POB: I joined eight years ago.
BOSS: I recently became a member about two years ago.
BON: The band ANNALYNN has been working for a long time, about 15 years. So some members left because they couldn’t take responsibility for the band.

NM Mag: It’s hard to keep up with the band.
BON: That’s right. Being a member of ANNALYNN carries a great deal of responsibility.

NM Mag: How is the current Thai metal scene?
BON: Not bad, but not as good as before.

NM Mag: For example, how is it compared to 10 years ago?
BON: Ten years ago there was a strong and wonderful metal community. At that time, if we did Live, maybe 500 to 700 people would have gathered.

NM Mag: That’s a pretty big scene!
BON: That’s amazing because it happened every week.
POB: Ten years ago.
MONG: It’s not the story now (laughs).
BON: At the moment, maybe at most 100 people. Everyone went in a different direction as an adult.
MONG: Maybe listening to different music.

NM Mag: Did it flow into the current mainstream music?
BON: Like dance music. Isn’t that a phenomenon happening all over the world?

Thank you for your straight answer (laughs). Have you ever worked in a band other than ANNALYNN?
BON: ANNALYNN is the first band I and AREX formed in our lives.
MONG: Before I joined this band, I played in 3 other bands. I’ve played melodic metal and industrial metal like FEAR FACTORY.
BOSS: After graduating from university, I was a musician playing at a Jazz club in Chiang Mai. At that time, I was scouted by BON.

NM Mag: ANNALYNN’s sound has changed so much through its growth that I can’t describe it in one word. For example, in the album「STARE DOWN THE UNDEFEATED」released in Japan in 2017, we can feel the influence of German Metalcore from the huge and tight sound.
AREX (Ba.): Thank you, I’m glad. I like CALIBAN, a German metalcore band I’ve played with in the past.
BON: In terms of influence, the initial urge that made me want to do a band was LIMP BIZKIT. When I first heard their album「Significant Other」I was shocked like « What’s that! ». Right now, my favorite band is DEFTONES.
POB: Same, DEFTONES. What I like about high gain guitar sounds is definitely their influence. Besides, I like BLINK-182 and YELLOWCARD, they are easy listening compared to DEFTONES (laughs).
BOSS: It’s NORMA JEAN, MESHUGGAH for me.
MONG: (He imites MESHUGGAH’s guitar) D~~~~n , D~~~~ n (all laughs). I’m MACHINE HEAD. I think 1999’s「The Burning Red」is the best album. At that time I was totally immersed in Nu metal. I was also influenced by SEVENDUST and FEAR FACTORY.
AREX: I like the skate punk because of MTV. I was Inspired by pop and punk like THE OFFSPRING and GREEN DAY. Then, I grew up listening to the same music as BON.
BON: Yes, I and AREX were growing up listening to the same music.

NM Mag: The Japanese version of 『Deceiver / Believer』 will be released on 3/6. Please tell us about this work, including the meaning of the title song「Deceiver / Believer」.
BON: The songs in this opus are based on what I experienced about 10 years ago. At that time, my family was in a difficult situation and I was in the worst situation. So we needed strong mental strength to get out of that woes. And the conclusion to survive in this world was to « stop believing in God ». The title「Deceiver / Believer」comes from that experience.
MONG: This work was released in Thailand in 2017, and here in Japan will be finally released in March 2019.

NM Mag:『Deceiver / Believer』 sounds incredibly ferocious. What happened to the band?
BON: Hahaha, thanks to the new member! The previous guitarist did not want the sound of a guitar with low tuning bass. So he was trying to balance him in. But after he left the band and BOSS joined, I felt like, « Okay, let’s do what we like without paying any heed to this concern! ».
POB: Yeah, « Let’s make a very deep and low sound! »
BON: It sounded really great (laughs).

NM Mag: Suddenly, I was surprised to hear a sound like EMMURE (laughs).
POB: Yeah! That’s exactly right (laughs).
BON: But I’m honest that the result of pursuing the style I want is the sound of this time. We are not giving much attention to what is said around us and we have an honest sound in「Deceiver / Believer」.

NM Mag: Chad Ruhlig (Vo. FOR THE FALLEN DREAMS) participates in the title song「Deceiver / Believer」. How did you decide to feature him?
BON: I played with FOR THE FALLEN DREAMS seven or eight years ago, and I was in contact with the band. That’s why Chad involved in the take-off of this song. Thanks to the footage he shot in the United States and then he sent me, Chad is also participating in the MV. We don’t have the money to go there (laughs).

NM Mag: The instrumental song「Codes」in the middle of the album plays a role like an interlude that has the effect of changing the atmosphere of the album.
BOSS: This is a song I wrote. I played the guitar with deep delay and reverb while thinking about the concept of the work. I finished it in no time.

NM Mag: In what style does ANNALYNN make music?
POB: Basically everyone is involved in songwriting. For example, if you find a guitar riff that you can use, make a demo with guidelines for the whole song. At that point, about 50% of the work is still to go to finish the rest of the song with the band. The band’s rehearsal room is in my house, where we gather and share ideas and directions for the songs.
BOSS:「Deceiver / Believer」was a very smooth completion.

NM Mag: When did you start the production?
BON: I started writing the songs in December 2016 and completed them in six months. This is a very fast pace for a Thai band. By the way, the recording engineer is Drof, who is also the Live engineer tonight. Another person, Tunwa, was involved in recording the vocal part.

NM Mag: I think the sound production of「Deceiver / Believer」has evolved dramatically compared to past works. I wonder why.
POB: What used to be a 6-string guitar became a 7 or 8-string guitar. I decided to talk to BOSS for a new sound. I changed the bass to 5-string, so I guess that led to the evolution of the sound.

NM Mag: Here in Japan,「Deceiver / Believer」released in March 2019 has been released for over a year since its release in Thailand. Are there any plans to release new songs produced during that period?
BON: We will be releasing a new song「Welcome To The Crew」on 1/25. It keeps the direction of「Deceiver / Believer」and incorporates new elements.
POB: This song uses electro drums that we’ve never used before. And I think you can feel the groove that has never been seen before. ANNALYNN is a band that keeps trying new challenges.

NM Mag: Is the new song「Welcome To The Crew」also released on a Major label in your home country?
BON: It’s a release from the same Major as「Deceiver / Believer」. The label is very supportive of the band’s activities and the relationship is going well.

NM Mag: I think ANNALYNN will increase the number of people who are interested in Thai metal bands. Could you give me some Thai metal bands?
BON: Yeah, maybe TERESA and LAST FIGHT FOR FINISH.

NM Mag: Do you know MELODIUS DEITE, a melodic speed metal band from Thailand?
BOSS: I know MELODIUS DEITE, but it’s a different band from us. There is no chance for us to get directly involved in this kind of different scene.

NM Mag: Finally, please give a message.
BON: ANNALYNN always plays music that makes us happy. So ANNALYNN has no goals. I’m glad if Japanese metal fans accept our music. Japan is a special place we always want to play.

[INTERVIEW] ANNALYNN Bon (Vo.) x CRYSTAL LAKE Ryo (Vo.) by Gekirock Magazine Dec. 2017

ANNALYNN is a Thai metalcore band who first came to Japan at Crystal Lake‘s「TRUE NORTH FESTIVAL」held on 2017, October 21st. Ryo Kinoshita from Crystal Lake is a guest vocalist on the song「Never Coming Down」on the debut album「Stare Down The Undefeated」released on 2017, December 6th. Both bands are aware of each other because they ensure the smooth running of the metal scene in each other’s own country, but this time on the day of「TRUE NORTH FESTIVAL」, BON (Vo.) from ANNALYNN and Ryo from CRYSTAL LAKE allowed us to have a talk beyond the border. We asked them to talk about their encounter and mutual impressions and about the Thai music scene just before the performance.

ANNALYNN: BON (Vo)
Crystal Lake: Ryo (Vo)
Interview: Ryosuke Arakane
English Translation: Gaëlle Gedda

Gekirock Mag: This time, at the「TRUE NORTH FESTIVAL」hosted by CRYSTAL LAKE (held at Shinkiba STUDIO COAST on 2017, October 21st), we will talk about ANNALYNN’s first visit to Japan. Could you tell me more about your first encounter?
Ryo (Vo. CRYSTAL LAKE): I’m participating in a song called「Never Coming Down」in ANNALYNN‘s「Stare Down The Undefeated」. I suddenly got a mail from him saying, « Please, feature as Guest Vocalist », but of course I knew them beforehand. And I thought he would be a great guy around the exchange. When I went to Thailand for the first time, It was always clear and very good. That’s why we called them, we are not just returning the invitation back, but because we want to take care of them.

Gekirock Mag: What’s a great guy?
Ryo: Even though he is a tattooed brother (laughs). Thai people are all smiling and positive. The expression is completely different on stage and daily life, so I felt sympathy there as well.

« There weren’t many bands in Asia being in touch with us, so we were really happy about the offer. I was shocked by their sound » (Ryo)

Gekirock Mag: So that’s it. How did BON know about Crystal Lake?
BON (Vo. ANNALYNN): I did research on my own and the Japanese bands I found were Crossfaith, HER NAME IN BLOOD, and CRYSTAL LAKE. So when I was working on the album, I wanted to include guest vocals, and one of them was decided to be Jonathan Vigil of THE GHOST INSIDE, but I was also drawn to Ryo‘s singing voice. The concept of this song「Never Coming Down」Feat. Ryo Kinoshita of CRYSTAL LAKE) is based on the sunset itself, so the desire to perform with Asian bands has grown stronger. So I sent a passionate love call to Ryo.

Gekirock Mag: How did Ryo feel when he received the offer?
Ryo: I knew the band originally, and it’s the most popular metalcore band in Thailand, so I was happy. There weren’t many bands in Asia being in touch with us, so we were really happy about the offer. I was shocked by their sound.

Gekirock Mag: Did you feel something that was compatible with your musicality?
Ryo: That’s right.

Gekirock Mag: Where is BON attracted to Crystal Lake’s musicality?
BON: Everything (laughs). I think musicians need to constantly update and grow. There was a lot of determination that resonated even from that part.

Gekirock Mag: ANNALYNN was founded in 2003. What kind of music did you start playing with in the first place?
BON: A metalcore band. I like Swedish Death Metal… I think the music of ANNALYNN and CRYSTAL LAKE is very close.
Ryo: The year of formation is the same as ANNALYNN. He was influenced by the Nordic and Swedish Melodic Death Metal bands at the time but said that he had a New-school Hardcore foundation. Music that mixes Nordic bands with Hardcore is also the origin of the Metalcore.

Gekirock Mag: The musical background is similar. Can you tell me which bands influenced you?
BON: I like DEFTONES. I also listen to hip hop like N.W.A. and BEASTIE BOYS, and I also like AS I LAY DYING and TERROR. Even when listening in various ways, the influence of MISERY SIGNALS may be the biggest. I still like it now.

Gekirock Mag: Who are the vocalists that influenced you?
BON: I like Karl Schubach, the vocalist from「Mirrors」of MISERY SIGNALS.
Ryo: Karl is powerful.

Gekirock Mag: Listening to hip hop is also common with Crystal Lake.
Ryo: That’s right. Basically, everyone listens to everything.
BON: Yeah, right.

Gekirock Mag: So, what is the current state of the metalcore scene in Thailand?
BON: Talking about metalcore bands, LAST FIGHT FOR FINISH, NOBUNA and other young bands are working hard. So, it’s like running through the top towards a major… If you mention a band like ONE OK ROCK in Thailand, it will be around SWEET MULLET, RETROSPECT which came to Japan during this time.

Gekirock Mag: Is the metalcore scene in Thailand active?
BON: Umm, unfortunately, not very much. Seven years ago, about 500 to 700 people gathered in a live house in the underground, but now only about 50 to 100 people have gathered, and the scene has been depressed in recent years. The number of bands is decreasing and the audience is getting smaller. The band scene is much smaller, partly due to the rise of EDM and Techno music.

Gekirock Mag: In that sense, is there a strong desire to stir up the Thai metalcore scene?
BON: That’s right. Naturally, there is always a desire to keep the passion going and keep the scene exciting, just like the bands that appear today.

Gekirock Mag: Both bands have toured around the world. What do you feel is different from your own country?
Ryo: I feel that people in every country are moving with pure passion. Even if they don’t know how to manage the Mosh, whether they know or not the songs, it’s a more direct emotion. Especially in Thailand. When Crystal Lake first went, there were a lot of people watching the band for the first time, so I felt like I wasn’t sure how to react, but at the end, it was really exciting. I thought that people were listening to music with feelings.

Gekirock Mag: Which countries have had unusual reactions so far?
Ryo: When I went to Indonesia, there were people who stood on the fence for a long time and I thought that it was annoying (laughs), but I was really happy.
BON: I’ve been to Singapore, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China so far, but everywhere was a different response. Among them, the people in Taiwan had a very good reaction. This time, we will be playing in Japan for the first time, but maybe Japan will be number one. This is a personal opinion, but coming to Japan is the biggest goal of any Asian band. Maybe other Asian bands want to come to Japan.

Gekirock Mag: Does the Japanese music scene seem attractive and mature in Asia?
Ryo: How does it look… Taiwan has a deep Deathcore scene, and China has more Djent and technical metalcore than Japan. In total, Japan has many overseas bands coming to Japan, so the metal scene itself may look big in the sense that customers know various bands. So, it seems to be enviable.

Gekirock Mag: What was the impression of Japan as seen by BON?
BON: Actually, this is my second visit to Japan. The first time I came privately, and at that time I bought a Crystal Lake CD at TOWER RECORDS.
Ryo: Hahahaha (laughs).
BON: I like CDs. I also love Japanese food, so I ate various things. My favorite is fresh fish. I like wasabi and sushis.

Gekirock Mag: Then, as I mentioned at the beginning, can you tell us about the situation when Ryo participated in「Never Coming Down」on ANNALYNN’s「Stare Down The Undefeated」?
Ryo: I got the song data, and I did a vocal recording with two engineers in Japan. I was told, « I like your vocal style, so feel free to do it the way you want » (laughs). At that time we had never met directly. Of course, as expected, I immediately connected with him the first time we met. Even when I listened to the song, I did everything I could at that time.

Gekirock Mag: How did BON feel listening to the song?
BON: It was really great when I heard the sound source with Ryo‘s vocals. His singing voice was powerful and he didn’t say anything!

Gekirock Mag: ANNALYNN’s『Stare Down The Undefeated』is very complete, and if you like metalcore or Crystal Lake, you should check it out.
Ryo: No doubt.
BON: Thank you for today!

The first Japanese album of Thai No.1 metalcore band ANNALYNN who came to Japan for the first time for the「TRUE NORTH FESTIVAL 2017」hosted by Crystal Lake. The first thing that catches your ears is the vocal that is audacious and fierce. The voice quality that doesn’t go all the way to the end is somewhat melancholic which is also a natural attraction. The bluesy intro「Black Cloud」is a calm song with a drama of static and dynamic.「Dead Weight」features Jonathan (Vo) of THE GHOST INSIDE, and「Never Coming Down」features Ryo (Vo) of Crystal Lake. Also, only the Japanese Edition comes with two bonus tracks. Check out the latest release from this year!

[LIVE REPORT] 2019.10.14 CRYSTAL LAKE「TRUE NORTH FESTIVAL EXTRA」@ Tsutaya O-East, Tokyo (Japan)

「TRUE NORTH FESTIVAL」is a festival headed by CRYSTAL LAKE that calls for hardcore and rock bands from overseas. This special event was supposed to take place 2 days earlier at the mythical concert hall of Tokyo: Shinkiba Studio Coast. Unfortunately, CRYSTAL LAKE was forced to postpone the festival due to a typhoon that threatens to deluge Tokyo with the heaviest rain in 60 years.

Photo: John Gyllhamn

In the event of unforeseen disruptions, I was wondering how much audience will rush to this alternate show, how much excitement will be shown, but such worries faded away at the same time as it started.

The bands of the day follow another from 2 pm until CRYSTAL LAKE’s performance around 8 pm. The winners of CRYSTAL LAKE Special Live Audition「THE ROAD TO THE TRUE NORTH」opened the show: Vision Of Fatima, Daybreak Of Silence, The Last November. I thought it was such an opportunity for them to perform on the main stage and to be seen in full by the people attending the event, while they supposed to appear on the medium stage, one of the 3 stages, at the same time with other bands if it had been maintained at the Studio Coast.

Then, we could find the hardcore band SAIGAN TERROR from Koenji, the reunite BEFORE MY LIFE FAILS, NOISEMAKER that was renewed this year again and probably the more awaited hardcore band that comes from New York (USA) STRAY FROM THE PATH.

No fewer than 7 bands that sweep the audience along sparkling in their respective styles.

CRYSTAL LAKE finally appeared on stage and immediately imbued the audience with the fun and high-energy by inherited the thoughts of the 7 bands.

CRYSTAL LAKE came to take you on a voyage from seventh heaven to the fires of hell.

The inorganic mechanical sound of「Aeon」shaked the pit which was filled with cheers and covered by the heavy growl of Ryo (Vo. CRYSTAL LAKE) that echoes in the venue; CRYSTAL LAKE’s Live performance started this way.

As soon as you could hear the sound, the mosh pit was created and people were dealing with the frequent increase of anger on both sides spreading to others like a rabid animal determined to destroy everything around.

In order to ensure that this high energy continued, let’s go straight to「Hail To The Fire」.

The audience was thrashing around in the overcrowded pit, interacting with the band members by screaming with everything they’ve got « Zomba! Zomba! » to be heard against Ryo’s powerful voice and limitless determination.

The rhythm speeded up at a stretch on「Six Feet Under」and a circle pit occurred even if it was surrounded by fences. The crowd didn’t waver in the struggle for maintaining a system of free and undistorted competition on「Machina」.

Under its influence, Crystal Lake can be held liable for any virus transmission by the music, level contamination in the pit and addiction to the game. This situation turned into a scene straight out of hell.

« Welcome to the TRUE NORTH FESTIVAL EXTRA. Thank you to everyone who suddenly came here due to the postponement of the show, all the bands, and booths, thank you very much », said Ryo with his heart full of gratitude; And the expectations of those who waited for this festival seemed to be heard.

« Shibuya, let’s enjoy this day as a miracle as much as possible for those who couldn’t come », continued Ryo with a strong feeling, trying to make this festival that couldn’t be held as planned the best「TRUE NORTH FESTIVAL」into CRYSTAL LAKE’s history. There is no doubt that it must have been felt by everyone at the venue.

CRYSTAL LAKE proved this time again on「Lost In Forever」that they have substancial influence on the decision-making by teaching his audience there are no limits on what they can achieve. And it was the time to link between the voices and the bodies by uniting Ryo to the audience in a circle pit, like making a spiritual communion of hearts.

While continuing to share such a passion, some fans were traveling great distances to make it to this special event, the Japanese and overseas fans delivered as one, raising their fists on「Mercury」and singing along with Ryo « Tonight! Tonight! Tonight! » that is now wreaking havoc around the globe.

Although the wind had dropped quite a bit from the night’s maximum on the beautiful melody of「Apollo」, the waves of human bodies were still heavy, moving with lightening speed and dancing in an incomparable dazzle of color.

The characteristic high-speed guitar riffs and rare melodies that are not usually used in the metal category are interwoven, delivering the diversity of heavy sounds of Crystal Lake’s music.

The setlist was adjusted to accommodate such circumstances of the day as extending the time of the set in order to impress the crowd even more, so they fulfilled the promise they formulated at the beginning of the Live performance. « Let us play this song we haven’t performed in a while », said Ryo introducing「New Romancer」.

Ryo began to speak slowly while adjusting for catching his breath before saying: « Actually, some of our friends came from the United States, and they have to go back tomorrow, I couldn’t have looked at this day if it wasn’t today, so I deeply think it’s a real miracle. Thank you so much, I’m very grateful to all of you. And unfortunately, there are some bands that couldn’t come out this time, but someday I’d like to bring them back in front of everyone. Our feelings of TRUE NORTH don’t change even if the place changes or the time changes. I’m looking forward to it. I want to show an incredible Tour and to come back again and again! » ; The warm feelings of Ryo received loud cheers from the audience.

Then, while taking a short breath after setting up such a long set after a long time, YD (Gt. CRYSTAL LAKE) lowered his guitar and was excited by the talk that made him feel close to the audience.

« As Ryo said, I think there is something today. Of course, I think there are many people who suffer from disasters and suffer from damages, but I think that it’s really great that everyone could come safely today and hold it at the miracle O-East! », said YD also expressing his gratitude, and adding « Thank you very much to our team for dealing with this matter in such a short space of time. We were also happy to adjust in time for the bands. Thank you very much for coming over here! ».

Following the MC, the more curious fans or fans who couldn’t come to the show were already aware of the announcement that CRYSTAL LAKE was about to make.

« For everyone who came out today, for everyone who couldn’t come, and for all the bands, we will held「TRUE NORTH FESTIVAL -2 DAYS-」next year! », said Ryo out of revenge. The inconveniences of the day were however softened by the cheering crowd who welcomed this grand announcement.

« It’s the Olympics next year, but our Olympics are here! Let’s make it even more exciting for 2020! », said Ryo, stimulating the audience.

The champagne was prepared as a celebration for「TRUE NORTH FESTIVAL 2020 -2 DAYS-」 announcement, but before YD opened the bottle, there was a provision in backstage where the prepared champagne was opened by accident, so YD pretended an effect similar to popping the cork of the champagne bottle, drawing peals of laughter from the crowd. Such a relaxing exchange is also a precious part of the show.

« We’ll do it again next year! Welcome to the second part of the show! Are you ready Shibuya? We’re gonna play this song for the first time in a while! We don’t have any guests today, but all of you are guest vocals! », screamed Ryo like a conqueror, and the riff of「Beloved」started to flow while everyone immediately jumped and rampaged with more momentum.

The audience crowd-surfed in all directions on the heavy sound of 「Alpha – Omega」and the enthusiasm increased further like a hell picture.

« The next song is the last song! Shibuya, burn it out! », screamed Ryo like a devil and continuing with「Prometheus」. Ryo dived into the pit, and the audience also responded to the band’s resentment.

Before the ENCORE, Crystal Lake’s former vocalist Kentaro arrived on stage and YD as a leader started to talk about the original history of Crystal Lake.

« It will be the 20th anniversary in 2022. It’s really amazing. », said YD looking at the distant past.

« Because you’re a kid if you’re 20 years old. I’m proud to have been doing the band during that time. Really. It was a little bit moving to leave Kentaro for a while, but Kentaro said that 20 years is something amazing. We’ll do something when the 20th anniversary will be celebrated. Thank you for your support until then! », said YD boosting the audience with a positive message, the words of former vocalist Kentaro pushing Crystal Lake forward.

« The 20th anniversary will be celebrated by history, history, history, new generation and future generations, and everyone behind us! Thank you very much! », screamed Ryo to conclude, and everyone at the venue was waiting for the last song of the day「The Fire Inside」, therefore creating a hot space from beginning to end.

The title song「TRUE NORTH」(album「TRUE NORTH」, released on 2016, November 30th) is probably the only missing piece that completes the puzzle in this festival bearing the same name, being the metaphor of what CRYSTAL LAKE has been doing since the band formed.

Although this festival, which was influenced by the typhoon was said to be a miracle day, it was possible to hold it thanks to the staff, the audience, past and present, and most of all, CRYSTAL LAKE who has gained experience and self-confidence.

Over the years, as the music grew and established itself as an integral part of the show, CRYSTAL LAKE ended up putting his own signature on the music and live performances.

At the same time, CRYSTAL LAKE faced the constant challenge of adapting the music to the action onstage while maintaining the music’s consistency and thereby their own relevance for spectators.

And it’s not just their band’s growth that has been linked to Crystal Lake’s continually evolving, nearly 20-year-old history. They raise the metal scene wherever they go, and also involve young, veteran and overseas bands as well as bands around them, enlivening their own scene with the audience.

I would also like to congratulate CRYSTAL LAKE, STAFF and crew, who have worked to inspire others in the pursuit of the joys of listening to such great music.

Photo: ESP Guitars Japan

Although there seems to be a curse of persistent bad weather hanging over the Studio Coast every time, and even though it was heartbreaking not to hold the festival at this place taking heed of CRYSTAL LAKE’s history, as CRYSTAL LAKE said, their feelings about TRUE NORTH FESTIVAL are the same regardless of the place and time, and that will never change.

Congratulations on 「TRUE NORTH FESTIVAL 2019」and see you again next year!

[REVIEW] CRYSTAL LAKE New Album「HELIX」(Released on 2018, November 28th)

CRYSTAL LAKE
「HELIX」

It’s been 2 years since CRYSTAL LAKE released his previous album called 「TRUE NORTH」(released on 2016, November 30th). As said in the song「Light Up the Tunnel」(CRYSTAL LAKE – Album「The Sign」released on 2015, October 7th), « With a purest passion, there is no turning back, with a pen and your blood, take your life back », all that surrounds and envelopes you in this life is an image of the eternal life, a profound lesson explained through metaphors and abstract language so that it may be understood.

In this new opus, CRYSTAL LAKE tackles various themes, asking us for a reflection that would seek to discern the world view and the signs of the presence of the Lord in the practicalities of life. The main topics are rooted more in the realm of Science-Fiction, related to the single and title song「Apollo」(released on 2017, October 11th), approaching the religious cult into music with「The Circle」(Single, released on 2018, August 8th), and also working on systems dependent on human machination, but devoid of human emotions, reminding the song「Machina」.

「HELIX」

« I am the one above all. Every living thing will spiral into dust. Helix. »

We can notice in this album that the music and vocal mastery are technically a notch above everything.

HELIX means spiral. A double Helix is the structure of a DNA molecule, with two types of helical ladders, the shape like two curving lines twisted together that is made by two spiral strands (strings) of DNA (the chemical that controls each cell). That DNA, spirally continued, build a human body.

HELIX represents the circle of life. The circle is the most common symbol of universal significance. It’s one of the first forms traced by humans. It has neither beginning nor end, which makes it a universal symbol of eternity, perfection, divinity, infinity…

If I want to take this logic further, there is also a direct link to the previous release,「The Circle」. This song is represented by an Ouroboros, a snake eating its own tail, symbolizing the cyclic Nature of the Universe, creation out of destruction, life out of death.

On the intro of the song「THE CIRCLE」during Live performances, CRYSTAL LAKE recently introduced the practice of a Triangle by asking everyone in the audience to form a triangle shape with their hands. The triangle represents the psychic soul and the circle represents the spirit. The constitution of the circle in the triangle creates the human being (human body).

The summit of the Triangle is a fine peak that stretches to infinity and indicates the direction of the sky, in other words, the spiritual world.

The Music Video「THE CIRCLE」has also an Egyptian connotation that can also refer to the triangle as a pyramid, symbol of ancient Egypt, which is a symbol of its power in their time period and its strong religious beliefs.

CRYSTAL LAKE – 「THE CIRCLE」Feat. Masato of COLDRAIN

We can also notice the triangle in「AEON」Music Video which is represented in the « A » of the name « AJ Rebollo » (Gt/Vo. ISSUES) who is featuring on the song.

「AEON」 (Feat. AJ Rebollo from ISSUES)

「AEON」means life or an indefinite and very long period of life (lifespan) in the sense of forever, timeless or eternity; A power existing from eternity, an emanation or phase of the supreme deity. The term « aeon » can be used in reference to a period of a billion years (especially in geology, cosmology or astronomy) and Earth’s history.

As a reference to the title, CRYSTAL LAKE challenges the theory of relativity. As a result, space and time were interwoven into a single continuum known as space-time. For example, when the time expands, the space contracts, so the way of capturing time also changes depending on the speed. These are what CRYSTAL LAKE tried to catch with sounds through the music, lyrics, and images (「AEON Feat. AJ」 Music Video). CRYSTAL LAKE is now projecting into a digital future.

The main source of inspiration that emerges from the Aeon Music Video is the similarity, or should I say the representation of one of the most famous references in the world of Western art, a fresco painting by Michelangelo called « The Creation of Adam ».

God on the right, and Adam on the left

The image represents the near-touching hands of God and Adam (yet it is impossible for Adam to reach and touch the finger of the divine). This scene has become iconic for humanity. It’s a depiction of the moment in which God grants a spark of life onto Adam, creating the first man. The symbolism behind the hands is that even though Adam is created in god’s image, they are not of the same realm or level, as would be two humans shaking hands, for instance.

« Install thy kingdom of glory, We are the servants of holy »

In AEON Music Video, the roles are somehow reversed; Ryo (Vo. CRYSTAL LAKE) being in the place of God, and the robot (machine) instead of Adam. Everything is fine until you pay attention to their positions. Indeed, in the painting, God is above Adam, God representing the divine power giving life to Adam, but not only him, to all mankind. But in the Music Video, it’s the robot (machine) that is superior to Ryo; God creating humans and humans creating the machine that surpasses and controls humans.

This gesture linking Adam to God has become reused in other works in a derived or parodic form like for example in the movie « E.T. the alien » (1982).

Related to the painting, some people believe the god’s entourage represents a pretty accurate depiction of the human brain. It might simply be suggesting that our brain is a piece or extension of God. Or, more provocatively, he might be suggesting that God is the creation and projection of the human brain. We can also notice the brain in AEON Music Video which is controlled by computers/machines.

« Coded by prayers of emptied souls,
Controlled by plastic signs and templated hearts »

Others say that it’s, in fact, a uterus.

« Behold the virgin spawning the filth of the human race,
From her womb prolonged by machines. »

Also, the illusion of being controlled by time and emotions maintains a psychotic delirium.

For example, another very human emotion that is linked to creativity is the melancholy. An area of the brain is the emotional counterpart of the human soul which is sometimes activated when a sad thought is experienced.

The message seems to be that consciousness is the true gift that a creator can give its creation.

CRYSTAL LAKE -「AEON」 (Feat. AJ Rebollo from ISSUES)

「AGONY」

Agony means extreme mental or physical suffering.

« I have seen when the nemesis finds out,
Only thing ruling love must be fear,
So push away,
Push away everything you are,
Push away every living feeling you got »

Through the lyrics, Ryo evokes Nemesis, the goddess of retribution and vengeance. In a generic way, a nemesis means the worst enemy of a hero in a work of fiction. There is also a ritual called Nemesia; Its purpose was to avoid the nemesis of the dead, who were supposed to have the power to punish life if their worship had been neglected in any way.

The lyrics run into a loop at the start and end of the song and spirals in time (Helix).

「+81」

It’s an anti-party song, like bands who pretend to be cool because they are partying, but it’s also a superficial attitude, so Ryo just tried to make fun of it though the lyrics.

「+81」is the Japan country code which allows you to call Japan from another country.

The number 81 is also a combination of the vibrations of the number 8 and number 1. Number 8 relates to karma (spiritual law of cause and effects), and number 1 promotes creativity and creation, new beginnings, self-leadership, and assertiveness, striving forward and progress.

« I’m self made and I know cause I’m jaded,
Now I’ve taken control,
I’m self made and I know cause I made it,
Watch your back against the world,
Where the city never sleeps for us »

This number holds a powerful divine message that can transform life. It carries positive energies that can influence life in a good way. The meaning of the « + » (« plus ») in front of the number can be interpreted as « positive ».

This number is also called angel number that means a period of realizations. For example, the past few months have gone by in a blur and there were so many things that happened that you wish you can take back; It will encourage you to accept the hard truths of life and be okay with them.

Although Crystal Lake doesn’t talk about political problems, this song seems to oppose 2 ideas rather than 2 political parties, probably the balance between the positive vibes as self-leadership and the negative one through the anger and desire of revenge.

« Apeshit!
Apeshit! »

« Apeshit » is a state of anger and rage that produces behavior more closely resembling that of an enraged ape than a human (from the habit of enraged apes of flinging their own feces at their object of anger).

« Godzilla every day back in Tokyo,
Cause the mark of the beast has been carved right upon me »

The original Japanese name of Godzilla is ゴジラ (Gojira). It is formed from a combination of two other Japanese words : ゴリラ (gorira, gorilla) and 鯨 ( くじら, kujira, whale). This name described Godzilla as a cross between a gorilla and a whale.

Godzilla is the embodiment of violence and hatred for mankind because he was created by atomic energy. He carries this rage within him because of his origins. He’s like a symbol of humanity’s complicity in their own destruction. He doesn’t have emotion. He is an emotion.

「LOST IN FOREVER」 Feat. Daniel McWhorter & Tyler Riley from GIDEON

The theme of this song is about this abstract thing called « time » that makes us think about eternity and live as if we could live forever.

« We’re lost in the moment that we’ve called forever »

It’s about this impermanence of life that we are so deeply afraid of. But every bubble is born to burst, I think it’s just a matter of life.

The resulting encounter between time and eternity makes us acknowledge the fact that death is inevitable. During this period of transition, we have to learn how to live in the world, as well as know-how to die to this world, and when the time comes, know to awaken to eternity.

Although the time is an abstract measure, it’s the best indicator of time use at the aggregate level. It’s hard to get into the concept of the sun, dream, time, eternity, memory, space, purity and innocence. This is the reason why Ryo (Vo. CRYSTAL LAKE), through the lyrics, makes it a little more manageable and friendlier.

Therefore, we are making meetings and partings, but in spite of that, life ends. To build such strong bond with people in a such amount of time makes the separation difficult. But the feelings that connect people seem to be tied firmly.

Likewise, happy and sad moments are transient and bound to end, but still living though inside somewhere in a corner of the heart that we call « forever ». And it will never change and will last forever.

If you look back, are you really satisfied with your achievements over the past years? Do you have any regrets? Do you have any dreams that you haven’t yet fulfilled? What should I do now?

 « If I finish what I started,
What will I have to lose,
You’re the scar in my heart,
Living proof of my youth,
When will I ever again or never again,
Will our heart beat synchronize again? »

We are all facing such moments in life that allows us to project ourselves into the universe of this song.

It may just be an anecdote, but this song comes as a result of the meeting between CRYSTAL LAKE and GIDEON (USA). They met for the first time in Japan in July 2017 at the「BLOODAXE TOUR 2017」, they hit it off right from the start, became close friends and called each other « Family Forever ». From that time forward, both were already related to the notion of time passing.

They shot the Music Video of the song in Shibuya (Tokyo) when GIDEON came back to Japan on the occasion of the「BLOODAXE TOUR 2018」.

CRYSTAL LAKE – 「LOST IN FOREVER」
Feat. Daniel McWhorter & Tyler Riley from GIDEON

「OUTGROW」

This song represents a beautiful and cruel image of the dream with lyrics that fit inhumanity.

There is a gap between the beauty of the melody and the cruelty of words. Sometimes it’s the tone, facial expression or body language that let you know. Here, Ryo plays with words and twists them around. Also, the « vocal riding » is like a bunch of beats. The gap of the magnificence by the mid-tempo of the music in contradiction with the lyrics seems to be part of the game.

« Would you understand what makes the world go around,
You think you do,
You really don’t with a mind of a hypocrite,
If you can’t understand what I’m singing on this track,
You’d shut your fucking mouth and get over it »

If you just get rocked by the music, you will probably think that the translucency of this song is beautiful. But if you look at the lyrics, you will say « Did you really say all of these things? ».

「RITUAL」

Despite the depth of the themes covered and more sharpened music, CRYSTAL LAKE doesn’t forget where they belong, the stage. This track is carving out for Live performances.

CRYSTAL LAKE describes the band with a metaphor as a cult praying the music like a god. They spread the word all over the world and gradually infect people by leading them into music.

This track has something savage, especially through the « OOH! », and remembers me of the « jungle law ». In other words, and contrary to what it suggests, there is no law in the jungle. The social customs and unwritten rules are about to be ignored.

From an animal point of view, it’s something like the biggest most vicious tiger gets to be the alpha male, eats first after every hunt, and claims the most sexual rights.

From a human point of view, it’s something like an ability to lead others, being a successful speaker that can persuade people with his logic and not being afraid of confrontations.

So, it means declaring jungle law is simply declaring anarchy and doing what you want, which are also the key words during concerts.

Moreover, this song also makes me remember « Down With The Sickness » from the American band Disturbed. There is something similar to the « OOH! » and the intention emerging from the lyrics « Get up, come on get down with the sickness ».

 DISTURBED – 「DOWN WITH THE SICKNESS」

「HAIL TO THE FIRE」

Then, we go on logically with this song full of good feelings which are probably the most expected song for the Live performances.

There is a feeling like « Just free your mind and let’s dance together in the flames of hell » that comes to my mind listening to this song.

« Dance in the pit and hail to the fire! »

Remembering the essence of rough metal from the ’80s and ’90s, we can clearly hear the inspiration of that time remitted into Crystal Lake’s roots.

Ryo opted for coined words like「Zomba Zomba」which has no meaning, but easy for everyone to say and remember, whether you know or not Crystal Lake.

From a historical perspective, the ancient practice of fire rituals was used for healing and purification in a sacred way. A fire ceremony can be used to release unwanted energies and attachments from the past and make space for new intentions; To release unhappy memories, fears, negative emotions, and anything that you are holding onto that doesn’t serve you.

Fire can heat your food or burn down your house. It is a force of destruction, creation and purification. We can be engulfed in flames or on fire with inspiration. It can be used in positive ways to enrich our connection with the divine.

« Cleans down your soul keep anger in stored,
Fools are enslaved by the self involved,
Faking smiles for ill desires,
They’re ignorant being with no sense of shame »

CRYSTAL LAKE -「HAIL TO THE FIRE」

「DEVILCRY」

One of Crystal Lake strengths is to be able to touch on topics arise from imagination, or to deal with current topics, daily living or present moments.

From the first verse, we understand that the lyrics of this song are addressed to people who suffered from the heartbreaking loss of loved ones [Unfortunately, Shinya (Gt. CRYSTAL LAKE) recently lost his mother].

« We say goodbye like a thousand times,
Until it gets to the one that’s closest to you,
Even the devil cried watching his mother fly away »

In the anime/manga Fullmetal Alchemist, the protagonist Edward Elric rattled off a list to bring humans back to life by proving that science (in the form of Alchemy) can create people by a formula (the composition of the average human body).

Additionally, as understood in the Fullmetal Alchemist universe, humans are comprised alchemically of three major parts: the body, the mind, and the soul. It has been stated that, broken down to its basest components, the average adult human body is comprised of Water (35 L), Carbon (20 kg), Ammonia (4 L), Lime (1.5 kg), Phosphorous (800 g), Salt (250 g), Saltpeter (100 g), Sulfur (80 g), Fluorine (7.5 g), Iron (5 g), Silicon (3 g) and fifteen traces of other elements.

I guess this is what Ryo deciphers and transcribes into lyrics, if only we could have the power to make people we love relive.

« If I mix a bit of water carbon salt and sulfur,
Add a tad of lime and iron,
Trace of phosphorus with the rest of it,
Would you spirit come back to the flesh I made? »

Edward Elric / Fullmetal Alchemist

The soul (but often referred to as the spirit), on the other hand, is a component apparently unique to humans in the Fullmetal Alchemist universe. While a human remains alive, however, the body and soul are connected by an entity known as the mind.

The soul is the incorporeal and supposedly eternal part of a human which contains emotional attributes that separate entirely from the physical body at death. After all, death is proof of our existence.

CRYSTAL LAKE – 「DEVILCRY」

「JUST CONFUSING」

« Is it mentally abusing or abusing your mentality ? »

No doubts that this short track is the biggest surprise of this new album.

Ryo stages something like a psychotic delirium with madness in his way of singing. Or should I say psychedelic? (which means « mind-manifesting »).

Before, the desired effect was related to drugs which bring about a hallucinogenic, spiritual trip (such as LSD) and had a strong effect on the mind.

More commonly now, the term is used to describe things that seem to recreate or reflect the experience of altered consciousness. This term is somewhat synonymous with « trippy ».

That’s the reason it’s usually applied to art and music that uses a strange or non-standard signature.

In this album, Ryo wants to express more personal things through the lyrics, like his personal struggle, depression and confusing time, something like an undulating of extreme and abnormal emotions.

「APOLLO」

Therefore, the addition of Apollo in「HELIX」was inevitable, this song including all the themes covered by CRYSTAL LAKE in this album. Crystal Lake established a close link between his worldview and how to express it in various musical ways.

Apollo is the God of prophecy, medicine, music, art, law, beauty, and wisdom. Later he also became the god of the sun and light. Apollo 11 was also the name of the spaceflight which landed the first man on the moon.

« I want it all space time in sync,
Life intertwines my desires in sonic speed,
So we lift from the ground,
Blasting off much higher and higher we go »

CRYSTAL LAKE is still majoring in the heavy stuff this time trying to balance the song with a more sensuous part through harmonic vocals and slow main riffs to fit an emotional feeling.

In the music video, CRYSTAL LAKE is enshrouded by the galaxy colors which is sequenced in three main features: the red sequence (elliptical galaxies), the blue cloud (blue galaxies, spirals), and the green valley (underpopulated space known of red spirals). The touch of sensuality can be clearly noticed by the sparkle of purple/pink lights.

We can see a big eye at the beginning of the video which can represent the world vision of CRYSTAL LAKE; The band members walking and exploring the world around. The music video ends with Ryo who is praying in front of the vastness of the earth and seas.

CRYSTAL LAKE -「APOLLO」

「SANCTUARY」

It’s on this logical conclusion that this new album ends with this song called「Sanctuary」; As if we walk this pilgrimage of faith together heading to the sacred precinct.

« The crown of thorns »

The crown of thorns (thorny plant) was placed on the head of Jesus during the events leading up to his crucifixion, the red bracts of the flowers representing his blood. It was one of the instruments of the Passion, employed by Jesus’ captors both to cause him pain and to mock his claim of authority.

Here, the lyrics express the belief that you don’t want to bend. The meaning is that, no matter what happens, even if the environment change, CRYSTAL LAKE doesn’t feel affected by that. They will keep doing as they have always done until the present time, and it will never change.

« This crown of thorns,
Wound like a snake,
Forever it’ll give me a peace of mind »

« This crown of thorns wound like a snake » can also be a reminder of the snake Ouroboros which is symbolized in the song「The Circle」.

Finally, the album ends the way it began, like a circle.

To conclude, CRYSTAL LAKE takes a further leap in this New album「HELIX」. They tried to add new elements to their music without forgetting the Metal essence of their roots. CRYSTAL LAKE’s worldview is their main asset.

It’s really amazing to hear that a song evolves naturally from the other; there is a logical follow-up. Just imagine how difficult it must be to perform this new album Live according to such a technical level, the amazing changes in tone of Ryo’s voice and the various changes of speed.

CRYSTAL LAKE is putting all of themselves into their work, infusing it with their passion and emotions.

Metal lovers or not, we are all facing such moments in life that allow us to project ourselves into their universe.

Thank you so much to CRYSTAL LAKE for this masterpiece which is definitely the best release of the year.

Crystal Lake announces its new album「HELIX」, which is about two years after the previous album「TRUE NORTH」. They have been pursuing their own heavy music based on hardcore and metal, but they are surprised by the great evolution that can be said to be a leap in this work and its perfection. With the European Tours getting more and more exciting, an American tour is finally decided for next year. From now on, both releases and Tours have been developed with a global perspective. This time at FLJ Magazine, Ryo (Vo), Yudai (G) and Shinya (G) challenged indoor skydiving before challenging the world.

FLJ: With this album「HELIX」, the pursuit of your music is making a great leap forward. What is the part you aimed at this time?

Ryo: Regarding the world view, the previous album「TRUE NORTH」had the aim of appealing more widely as Japanese Music. From there, there is a place where it has become natural, without aiming, that it has come to be able to bring out the goodness of the original Crystal Lake that is hyper heavy. In terms of lyrics, when I talked about it before, I thought that music was rebellious, angry, or born from such feelings. I’m not going back to the starting point, but why am I screaming? I’m screaming to bring negative things in a positive direction. That’s why there are so many internal themes. I’m not saying so much political, but there are many things that link to my current social situation, my life, so it came out naturally.

FLJ: Previously, when you made an album, you talked about making it using ratios or metaphors, but what about that part this time?

Ryo: This title「HELIX」means spiral. Compared to DNA, I wanted to express that DNA is connected in a spiral and is building a human body. From there, each song on the album is a DNA that expresses itself, and it combines with it to form an album called「HELIX」and expresses Crystal Lake. Furthermore, in terms of lyrics, I replace them with time. I think that genes are the turning points of life or every single event. That’s why a lot of DNA and narratives have been linked to each other in the vast history since the earth was created. I wanted to express such a wide time.

Yudai:「TRUE NORTH」had the concept of telling the goodness of Japan, and the previous album「THE SIGN」represented the band as a myth, likened to God. This time, it would be nice to make the backside of the album with an interesting feeling, and there was a sense of play as usual. Because we love Science-Fiction, movies, anime, and books, for example, Science-Fiction like Interstellar, etc. After that, if such a rock band did such a relativity theory, it would be amazing! It’s not NHK, but… (Laughs). The Science-Fiction is a bit too complex these days, but in the end, it’s like a human drama and I really like it. Then, with lyrics and music, the speed of time and something changes along with it, for example, the theory of relativity changes the way of perceiving time with respect to speed. I wanted to try it. That is a song called「Agony」. Even if it’s the lyrics, something loops at the start and end, and it spirals in time and calls it 「HELIX」. This time, I’m doing something linked to the world view that Crystal Lake has done so far.

FLJ: Moreover, there is a feeling that each song is an independent video work, and it expresses a digital feeling with a sense of the near future in terms of sound effects. Even in「AEON Feat. AJ」, you can put in and pull out many times the stuffy sounds of the double bass drum «Durururu… » in the second part of the song, and use the Live band to create and bring out a visual digital feeling.

Yudai: I’m doing it digitally, but I’m playing a lot. I think cinematic, or something that we have been able to capture has come to be able to do this. When I saw a channel of an American rapper or R&B producer, I was doing a process like a self-mashup, where I put a song from another track into another song. I tried some of these things this time. I suddenly changed what was made with different songs and they suddenly changed. There are various representations of the music to express in such different ways.

FLJ: There are many songs that don’t end normally.

Yudai: It’s not the last « mosh part », but I did something like making another interesting utopia and attraction with that kind of development.

FLJ: Crystal Lake is extreme every time they release an album. I think you’re trying to reach the limits of music, but how far do you want to go?

Yudai: Until now, I was thinking «Let’s do this, let’s do this ». I have listened to this kind of music from my teens and tried many things, but in the end, I think that my favorite point is still there. So far, I’ve been exploring around and I’ve been attracted by people who are not close to me like « Oh, it sounds great!». So this time, I thought « What is heavy? What do we want to do with super heavy? When you are trying new ideas of the band, will it go well?», like this. I tried it purely. So I really thought that it was an album that naturally had a hardcore essence, a metal essence, and a movie essence. I was enthusiastic about this work. Rather than « What I want to do? », we searched for creating only something with pure and heavy feelings. The reason for this blurring is that we finished the European Tour twice, went to other countries, and while I was on Tour, I reconfirmed that it was the way I wanted to do things.

FLJ : Oh, that’s big.

Yudai: I’m Japanese, so there’s an English complex, a complex of skin color, etc. But I became able to persuade me that this is not an issue if I can make something heavy and enjoyable as a band. You can go the way you want with the essential qualities. Of course, this is not only this, we have different parts and we also like melodies, so it may be Japanese Enka soul, people around me who have grown up, seniors, juniors, live houses, clothes, magazines, movies, etc. I think that everything is influential, and that’s why it’s always accompanied by a melody, so it probably won’t leave. It’s hard to be free on a heavy basis.

FLJ : You felt absolutely refreshed.

Yudai: Yeah, It was a very good feeling.

Ryo: And that’s what everyone feels as a band. The same goes for the lyrics. It’s important to keep it simple, and I thought a lot about the words that even the Japanese can understand. On the other hand, the words that naturally came out of my mind were more English-speaking that people from other countries can sing. That also influenced me for the lyrics.

FLJ: So you realize that it’s better to believe in what you think rather than aiming at this.

Yudai: I thought that was OK. When I will be 40 years old and 50 years old, worrying about the past, I wonder if I will say that it was better to tour the band and make music. I think that was the reason why I thought so, and I thought that it was linked to the album.

FLJ : The song「+81」definitely came out from Japan.

Ryo: I wanted to bring out Japan with a more convincing expression, different from「TRUE NORTH」. At first, it was the concept of an image like a samurai or a ninja, but it finally took a more serious direction and became something like an anti-party song. It’s like a party where bands are partying, and this is what Crystal Lake’s party looks like. On the surface, it may be something superficial, so I just tried to make fun of it.

FLJ: The song「Hail To The Fire」seems to be full of drive and determination in Live.

Ryo: We think about how to express the ’90s vibes like Soulfly or Sepultura into Crystal Lake’s style. I always wanted to do something that encourages shouts from the audience. I also use coined words like「Zomba Zomba」. Anyone can say that, and you want to say it naturally. I wanted to express that kind of primitive feeling. That’s why it’s often said that this song is amazing for Live performances.

Yudai: Because it’s the kind of words you say when you’re drinking (Laughs). Remembering the essence of rough metal from the ’80s and ’90s, I thought « Was it like this? », and then we expressed it in our own way.

FLJ: While the other songs on the album are cinematic, these two songs are amazingly straight.

Ryo: I personally like Sepultura’s Max Cavalera. He has been pursuing heavy and extreme music and hooking up underground bands around the world. I’m really longing for that stance. I feel like I can become such a person someday.

FLJ: Every song has various elements and emotions. Even an aggressive song is not just an attack, it always contains two or more different ones. That’s what you can now express with any element or emotion, right? How do you make it into a song in such a situation?

Yudai: For example, even if you think about big concepts such as relativity, dreams, and fairy tales this time, there is a more sensitive part to wrap around it. So, start with the feeling that you want to go with ultra-heavy or an emotional feeling that fits your feelings a little. Whether you’re drinking or eating with someone, you can talk and be naturally encouraged to create something. Even now, I think that all the songs we’re making have this same feeling. Even if you tell yourself to make something heavy, the world is packed with 20 years and 30 years of heavy history. I think it’s better to use the craziness of your head and the madness feeling that makes you free to do what you want to do.

FLJ: I want to reach the point of being crazy.

Yudai: Crazy people are more interesting (Laughs).

FLJ: For example, in the case of「Hail To The Fire」, did you get「Zomba Zomba」with a tribal feeling after the song’s made? Or did you create a song with the keyword tribal from the beginning?

Ryo: It was a keyword from the beginning.

Yudai: We’re talking about « Let’s go like this » or « That sounds good! » before making a demo. So, for example, if you go to a festival, and tens or thousands people who don’t listen to hardcore or metal usually say « Zomba Zomba, amazing! », I can feel positivity from both sides. « Hey guys, that’s really good, we want to hear more! », if you say that it’s good, there’s a feeling that there’s no more danger, and then it becomes an entrance that you’re going to love it more. It’s a mixture of a double feeling. Ryo also uses sarcastic words and loves underground heavy music in a metamorphic way, so I think that’s how he feels.

FLJ: I think that Ryo’s way of singing has become even richer in「HELIX」. It’s pretty impressive, like how to sing and feel out with psychotic thinking, or the feeling of going crazy with some rap tones on the loud drumming.

Ryo: That is something I want to express all the time. I want to express something like the ups and downs of extreme emotions. Lyrics are the same for verses 1 and 2, but with the concept of shaking the emotions and making hooks, we were able to create something interesting.

FLJ: The song「Outgrow」is also interesting because it expresses such magnificence at mid-tempo. It’s beautiful.

Yudai: It might be a beautiful and cruel image of the dream with lyrics that fit this inhumanity, but there is a gap there, that seems to be a voice that says « Don’t be silly ».

Ryo: I have a feeling that the moment when such emotions are shaken off is beautiful. If you listen to the song without looking at the lyrics at all, you’ll hear a beautiful song, but when you look at the lyrics, you say « Did you really say all of these things? ». I want everyone to enjoy sarcastic expressions by reading or not the lyrics. Well, there is also a game.

FLJ: What do you sing in the last song「Sanctuary」of the album?

Ryo:「Sanctuary」means a sacred precinct and expresses a belief that you don’t want to bend. As we said before, it was a feeling like « Let’s go this way ». No matter how the environment changes, we are not affected by it at all, and the core part was firmly expressed. It’s a more personal expression, but I’m trying to convey it.

FLJ : What are your plans for the future?

Yudai: I think 2019 will be an activity to convey the album throughout the year. The Tour will start in January and we will go to as many places as possible. Currently, Japan, United-States and Russia are also organized, but from there, we will return to Japan, go to Europe, go to Asia, go back to Europe and go to China. We plan to go around the world throughout the year. We’re thinking about making a「HELIX」Tour in 2020. The start is in Japan and we will return to Japan again in January 2020.

FLJ: I think Crystal Lake has entered a new chapter after Ryo joined, and the music is getting sharpened and the scale of activities is getting bigger and bigger. How far do you want to go through?

Yudai: The reason why we live our lives on Tour is that we have always loved it. You can grow as the scope of your music expands. We’re trying to make sure that our music is transmitted to everyone and becomes a thing of their schedules. Listening to this, and thinking « Heavy stuff are really amazing! », then it becomes a base and something is born. We feel like we are aiming for it. After that, we would like to do our own event in the world.

Ryo: I want to be a Japanese slayer (Laughs). They are always active and always at the forefront. Have you been headlining for decades? It’s always changing, but we want to keep going and staying on the front line for a long time.

[INTERVIEW] Ryo (Vo. CRYSTAL LAKE) x Rolling Stone Japan Magazine Vol.04「Music x Fashion」Sept. 2018

Ryo
(Vo. CRYSTAL LAKE)

Music x Fashion, culture & roots by CRYSTAL LAKE’s frontman

CRYSTAL LAKE has gained tremendous support from heavy-loud music listeners with its original sound and worldview, and an overwhelming enthusiasm for its roots in hardcore and metalcore. Ryo, the vocalist of the band, is an artist who values fashion and culture closely linked to music. He talked about his fashion roots and CRYSTAL LAKE activities.

RSJ: What kind of fashion do you like?

Ryo: I like black. The whole body may be black, but I like to play with colors. I also like playing with hairstyles and the shoes I wear and attaching accessories.

RSJ: What’s about Band T-shirts? You’re wearing a T-shirt of a band called GODFLESH today.

Ryo: Would you not like to appeal to a band that influenced you? I like music, but I like clothes that have a background. To wear band T-shirts means to dare wearing something that understands his identity.

RSJ: Is there an artist you longed for, including fashion, when you got into music?

Ryo: It’s heavy metal bands from the ’90s, like Machine Head. I don’t wear leather jackets, but I really like the music and fashion of that time when I got closer to the street, like wearing military pants and large tops. The same is true of the vocalist Rob Flynn, and Sepultura‘s Max Cavalera also influenced me by fashion.

RSJ: What kind of fashion did you do when you were a teenager?

Ryo: The combination of skinny pants with band T-shirts hasn’t changed from that time. The first T-shirts I bought were Metallica and Rage Against The Machine. Despite the time that has passed, it’s not blurred in mind (laughs).

RSJ: What are your favorite Classic items?

Ryo: I’ve always liked and wore VANS & Dr. Martens since my student period. I like Dr. Martens unusual loafers and unusual prints instead of the classic 8 holes. I like things that have a basis with a slightly different taste.

RSJ: You’re wearing a Skinny pant right now, but that was influenced by the ’90s, wasn’t it that time?

Ryo: The Dabo-Pant is about three-quarter length, right? But I also increased the wearing of thick pants recently. I’m also wearing Dickies’ extra-thick pants and trying to bring out the old taste. I’ve dared to wear skinny pants for stage costumes until now, but recently I’m more conscious about my own comfort on stage appearance and I can show it in a natural way.

RSJ: Fred, the Limp Bizkit‘s vocalist, who came to Japan in April, also wore a superb Dapo-Pant.

Ryo: We could see his butt completely (laughs). I like Limp Bizkit and Fred was a fashion leader, so I used him as a reference. They often came to Japan together with KORN that I like more. It’s a dark atmosphere, but super heavy. KORN‘s fashion was quite different from other bands. I was attracted by the upper and lower Dickies workwear, and the full-body Adidas tracksuit. I thought something like how can you be so cool in a jersey? I’m not feeling like Suchmos, I’m KORN (laughs).

RSJ: I would like to hear about the future activities of CRYSTAL LAKE.

Ryo: A new album will be released later this year. From October, the family « JMS presents BODY and SOUL » Tour will begin. After that, we will go on European Tour in November and December.

RSJ: Crystal Lake has a great wave right now.

Ryo: We also feel it. I think it’s great that the band is moving towards a single goal. Even when I went on the European Tour, the band united and moved on to the goal. That came very suddenly, so I knew that we weren’t the only ones popular in the boom. So even if you can mobilize people, I want to increase it little by little.

RSJ: The quality of the Single « THE CIRCLE » released on August 8th is high, and the Live performances are getting tighter.

Ryo: I think that we have gradually established ourselves since the release of「Apollo 」last year. If you are Japanese, you can’t do this unless you are the same as you do for songs and the style of Live performances, but when you go abroad, there is a lot of consciousness.

RSJ: It seems that the European Tour was a great response. You’ve just been asked, but why can you live up to the highest expectation of Live performances?

Ryo: That’s right. But it has always been a thing, and I think that is our color, so I’d like to make it sharper. In Europe, the market is originally big, but it was a better welcome than expected. We were surprised because there was no expectation at all. Are you looking for something that isn’t in Europe or something unusual? I felt it this way.

RSJ: Crystal Lake is original not only in sound but also in the world of lyrics written by Ryo.

Ryo: After all, I can’t be a gangster, and I can’t feel so poetic, so I want to write in my own words. There are science fiction novels and movies that have influenced me so far, and I really like fantasy. I’m always thinking about how to put such a thing into the real world. I love myths and I love Star Wars. Do you feel that you’re saying what you really want to say? Anger is the root of everything. Why do you scream? I’m not angry and I’m not complaining about society, but I’m screaming because I stockpile anger every day. I think it’s not interesting if the cry isn’t real. I want to express something that naturally springs in. I want to make something that can be heard and felt. Looking back in the history of music, both Rock and Blues came out of such anger and cry. It’s a thing, and I think it’s the most important to do.

RSJ: What are your future plans?

Ryo: We will go on Tour and release an album, and we would like to do a One-Man Tour for the release of the album at the beginning of next year. Then, we want to go to America. South America also has a lot of pointed metal, and if you have roots in Sepultura or South American metal, you want to go there for sure.

[INTERVIEW] CRYSTAL LAKE ~INTERVIEW~ by「FLJ MAGAZINE」ISSUE #61 Sept. 2018

CRYSTAL LAKE
Release of the New Single「THE CIRCLE」

CRYSTAL LAKE, whose the previous work「APOLLO」was released in October last year, are reaching new heights and rising in popularity worldwide, is about to release a New Single. Composed of 3 songs,「THE CIRCLE」includes a Featuring with Masato of COLDRAIN on the lead track, the second track「Lost In Forever」results from the meeting with the members from the American band GIDEON, and the third track is an ambitious Remix of the famous song「True North」by EUPHORIC WAVISM. On 2018, June 25th, appearing together with KOHH for the「REDLINE TOUR 2018 -Dirt Match-」, I met the vocalist Ryo and guitarist Yudai before the Live performance in Tokyo.

From the left, Shinya (G), Gaku (Dr), Ryo (Vo), Bitoku (B), Yudai (G)

FLJ : What’s the new song「THE CIRCLE」about?

Yudai: There is always a mood of renewal, but how should I care about the roots we have always believed until now, rather than a renewal, or what’s going to happen if you play with this kind of things? I made something like this theme this time. Crystal Lake hasn’t always had a worldview like this but, even if the process is conducted on this same unique basis, we fit in with the backbone of our culture, the 90’s Metal and New Metal from our roots. There are assets that, while enjoying such things, allow me to keep my current view of the world and make it in such a way that I can give a new taste to everyone.

FLJ: Is there a connection between the celebration of the 15th Anniversary of the band’s formation last year and the release of「APOLLO」?

Yudai: It could very well be linked. I didn’t think people would say that「APOLLO」is a good song. I also received a lot of messages and responses from other countries than Japan. I felt something like « Wow, did you really tell me such good things? ». However, I intend to continue that support working with a freedom-loving feeling, so it gave me a foretaste of what is ahead and thought it will be nice if people are pleased with it and linked all together.

FLJ: Although「APOLLO」was the attack song, there is a coexistence of brutal and beauty this time, a balance which makes this song a wonderful song.

Yudai: Thank you very much. Now, music can be spread easily by YouTube and the internet, right? And I felt it deep inside myself the last time we toured in Europe for the first time. I was conscious that it will be nice if I could make something like a conductive-paste like « Amazing, Japan! » or « Now, there are such things ».

Ryo: When I went to Europe last year, the reaction was completely different from Japan, and I felt a more direct feeling of the audience. I felt like a culture shock I had never experienced before. Maybe it was natural and direct to the feelings of the songs. I’m conscious of my vocal style that appeals to emotions more directly.

FLJ : Did you change the vocal approach ?

Ryo: Until now, I was making it with the consciousness of the technique used, but this time I made it in bearing in mind the need to be able to captive directly the listener with the words.

Yudai: As Ryo said, I think that the captivation in the words was different abroad. On the other hand, I felt that the culture shock didn’t change so much. It’s the same thing both in Japan and abroad that you get excited about doing Live. This is what I feel. The US and European stuff that we were listening to are the core of what we’re doing now. I felt that the reality of this link was real cause the blood that runs through what I was listening to was also flowing inside of my veins.

FLJ: Do you think that’s the unique way for overseas people to see CRYSTAL LAKE as an « original band »?

Ryo: We were told that it was energetic. Why can you do it so seriously every time? Many guys told me it seemed like that (Laughs). But that has always been our way of doing things.

FLJ: This experience is reflected in the vocal this time, right ?

Ryo: That’s right. Especially the first song called「THE CIRCLE」has new metal and metal from the ’90s, 2000’s, especially from the intro to the chorus melody, and the way I sing is conscious of that time, updating to my own style and successfully dropping it into CRYSTAL LAKE‘s style. I believe that the core is firmly metalcore, but I think that adding new elements has succeeded to expand ourselves.

FLJ: Why did you feature Masato of COLDRAIN as Vocal on「THE CIRCLE」?

Ryo: « Let’s do it someday », came out of a conversation before. By chance, it was the good timing.

Yudai: Masato also has a similar backbone such as New Metal and Heavy Rock, so this is the part we played with. I thought that it will be interesting to explore Masato‘s vocal capacities where COLDRAIN usually doesn’t do.

FLJ: It will be good to hear Masato singing with a heartrending voice.

Ryo: At first the key was higher, but Masato could easily reach the highest keys. It became that key through trial and error. He told me that’s the highest key he has ever done (Laughs). I think there is a feeling that isn’t in a conventional COLDRAIN.

FLJ: By the way, do you think about making a loud rock scene together with COLDRAIN ?

Yudai: No, we don’t (Laughs). The hardcore and metal scene was made by Senpai, and COLDRAIN has an approach that reaches out to the general public and I think that they are people who really convey the metal and rock music. We also want to become a tunnel there, and more than anything else, it will be more enjoyable by increasing the total population, in order to get the most out of people. After all, there are a lot of crazy guys around us, right? (Laughs). There is an overwhelming cultural difference from that, but I want to convey a sense of how fun that type of thing can be. Of course, the number of people may not increase easily, but if there is an entrance like « There is such a thing », some people will come in for sure. Even when I was a teenager and I was culture-shocked, the entrance was probably a more catchy and popular band, but the door to go deep into it was open. I always feel that making this opportunity is tremendously important. So today’s event is also an interesting event.

FLJ: Today is「REDLINE TOUR 2018-Dirt Match-」performance in Tokyo, but Osaka and Nagoya are already done. What kind of feeling was it?

Yudai: Players and artists have great links, but I’m faced with the feeling that our intended purpose still hasn’t been delivered to the people who are listening to us. Isn’t there a random variable when music is mixed? It feels like « Amazing day, today ». It is not an issue, but I feel that it would be better to convey this fun more. Gender is different, but the impact is the same. But if you get into it, it’s the same for hip hop and classic, pursuing and investigating thoroughly as a geek that we could feel together with the deep meaning of it. Even when I do OZROSAURUS, it’s amazing if I can get hooked. That’s why I don’t really like « walls ». I’m gonna do it in such a way that people can move and have fun. Even today’s REDLINE, I didn’t say anything else, but I came here with the feeling that « This is a super hybrid day ».

FLJ: Daniel McWhorter and Tyler Riley are featuring on the 2nd track「Lost In Forever」. Did you be tied together with Gideon during the tour in July last year?

Ryo: That’s right. We got along well with them. We called each other « Family forever ». At that time, they told us « Let me feature in the next song ». So we decided to do it. It’s a song that fits with Gideon, and it’s a song that seems to be quite unique, so I thought it would be great.

FLJ: What’s this song about ?

Ryo: This song is about the time we live in, thinking about eternity as if we could live forever, through this period of time, we are making meetings and partings, but in spite of that, life ends. This is the theme of this song. For example, I look back and regret, saying « I should have done it at that time », or I’m worried like « What should I do now? ». The theme of time is abstract, but I made it in such a way that I could feel more familiar with it.

Yudai: Like for「Lost In Forever」, I’ve always thought that it would be amazing and fun to feature songs with friends. I thought that a single approach would be more interesting in terms of work and timing. Then, I wanted to introduce my friends and I thought that it would be better to do it by playing songs together. So I made two patterns. The third song is a Remix of the title song of the album「True North」and my friend remixed it.

FLJ : Is EUPHORIC WAVISM your friend ?

Yudai: Yes, it is. It’s a friend who has always helped us with our work. Even for ourselves, the works we put out last year were tremendously important, so I think that people who make musical arrangement and get into what they are listening to is always an opportunity. A long time ago, I listened to a remixed work by a DJ related to one of my favorite bands, I listened to a remix of a favorite song with another arrangement, and a heavy thing became mellow. I enjoyed it very much, and I felt like I wanted to try it with the same degree.

FLJ: I’d like to ask the meaning of the title「THE CIRCLE」.

Ryo:「APOLLO」was a song about going to a new field, but this time the theme is how to open up when you get to a new place. I think a band is like a cult. There are believers, Guru and dividers. Guru, and dividers are bands, and believers are likened to listeners. It’s a message like « We’ll show you the new world, so follow us ». In that context, I express God’s presence in this cult like our music or CRYSTAL LAKE itself. Masato comes out on the way, but in fact, he is a back boss or a character setting like a boss (Laughs). We made it with an image that will appear later.

Yudai: We arrange words that are written in real occult books and put them in lyrics. I’m playing and linking in such places.

Ryo: It’s a prayer phrase very interesting like « I’ll introduce you to the devil ».

Yudai: You can say something like « What you’re doing is at the top-level ». That’s what rappers and rock stars say. Somewhere in Japan, there may be a culture that captures such things negatively. But if you like and make the best music, you can say « That’s the best » like an occult, but it’s not like « prostrating oneself before its own imperialism » (Laughs). I don’t think I’m wrong by saying that I’m fine with it.

Ryo: Actually, when I wrote a lot, I looked at the stories of Charles Manson, Aleister Crowley, and a real cult organization. What they do is not right, but I feel anew that they had their own justice and they had the belief they were looking for. I thought it could be compared to a band. I tried to incorporate it. It’s a difficult theme to touch (Laughs).

CRYSTAL LAKE New Single「THE CIRCLE」Released on 2018, August 8th.

FLJ: From 2018, June 30th, you will Tour in UK and Europe, but what kind of Tour is it this time?

Ryo: How many people can we touch this time? There are many big festivals. I think it will be different from the previous time.

Yudai: The last time, I felt the scale-up deep inside my body. For the time being, it led to the promotion of the single and we will go there again in November, but now I feel like I’m making a groundwork where we can make our own One-Man or Headline Tour next year.

FLJ: Do you have a label and management’s support over there now ?

Yudai: We have an agent called Loud Noise in the UK and Europe. They do it with great love. Next, we are aiming for the Download Festival. We also had an offer for Belgium’s Graspop Metal Meeting Festival, but the Live show was covered with another one, so we couldn’t do it. I also want to go to Hellfest.

FLJ: You will head the「TRUE NORTH FESTIVAL」this year again, right? What kind of content will be this year?

Yudai: Basically, I want to bring bands with the same feelings around us and bands we’ve ever toured with or met overseas with the same attitude. Moreover, we auditioned the same way this year, and about 120 bands came out from it. I hope we can do it together with those who have the desire to meet people and to get new opportunities.

[REVIEW] 2018.08.08 CRYSTAL LAKE New Single「The Circle」Feat. Masato (Vo. COLDRAIN) & GIDEON (USA)

Over the last year, the indefatigable CRYSTAL LAKE was back in the studio again, working on material for a brand new album, delivering their New Single「The Circle」on 2018, August 8th in only 10 months since the release of the previous single「Apollo」(released on 2017, October 11th).

The CD is composed of 3 songs: The lead track「The Circle」includes a Featuring with Masato of COLDRAIN, the second track「Lost In Forever」results from the meeting with Daniel McWhorter (Vo.) and Tyler Riley (Gt./Vo.) of the American band GIDEON and the last track is an ambitious Remix of the song「True North」by EUPHORIC WAVISM.

01.「The Circle」Feat. Masato of COLDRAIN

The title song is about 4 minutes and 50 seconds, coming up with strong guitar riffs or completely high, a sharp bass, and an explosive drum, all this surrounded with harmonic sounds. The Live feeling is also outstanding; You can imagine yourself at the show, feeling so touched by the music that you are compelled to sing along « Break us, break us! Save us, save us! Take us, take us! ».

In addition, the new oriental guitar phrase develops the musical pattern and adds depth to the melody. We can also notice the influence of the New metal and metal from the ’90s, 2000’s, especially in the vocal, that give to the song some thought about the subject and the hook of the song.

By the way, talking about the meaning of the song,「The Circle」is a metaphor that describes the band as a cult, praying to the music like a god, leading the people and gradually infecting them with the music by spreading the word all over the world.

「THE CIRCLE」‘s CD cover artwork designed by Koh Yamada represented an Ouroboros, a snake eating its own tail, symbolizing the cyclic nature of the universe, creation out of destruction, life out of death.

Masato (Vo. COLDRAIN) is featuring in the middle of the track, making this song the latest masterpiece released in the Japanese music industry.

「The Circle」Music Video also has an Egyptian connotation, famous for great cultural advances in human knowledge, from the art to science to technology and religion. Moreover, the Egyptian culture is often associated with death and mortuary rites, the meaning of human beings and the purpose of remembrance. CRYSTAL LAKE wants us to understand the hidden spiritual meanings by the illumination of our holy spirits.

CRYSTAL LAKE‘s members are dressed in their finest clothing, traditionally set with the finest place settings and silverware, gathering to share prayers and a festive meal, drinking red wine which was usually used mostly for ceremonial purposes for the upper classes.

Therefore, the customs include telling the story and celebrating freedom from slavery in ancient Egypt, based on the Biblical verse: « It is because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt ». There is a tradition for the person leading the ceremony to wear a white robe, thus we can guess that Masato (Vo. COLDRAIN) is chairing the table.

« Thy will be done in hell for it is yours,
Almighty Lord who lives and reigns forever more,
Thy will be done in hell for it is yours,
We praise his holy name as servants of the Lord »

This scene gives reality to the main topic of the song.

We can also notice a circular Egyptian mythology calendar, a solar calendar, that conjectured to represent the seasons, months, planets, days and hours. The representation of this planisphere map (Zodiac) in circular form is unique in ancient Egyptian art. All other references to the Zodiac or astrology are either square or pyramidal in shape and design, a symbol of the ancient Egypt period’s power and its strong religious beliefs.

Ryo is playing with a goat which became associated with the unofficial image of the devil.

CRYSTAL LAKE「The Circle」Music Video was directed by INNI VISION. The seahorse bangle and pendant were created by「Bottega Ruan」from the Japanese artist Nishimura Takanori. The tattoos (full back body tattoos) were realized by Kaketattoos, and Ryo‘s tattoos by Mii Ink Tattooer; With the participation of TORIZO, the pet bird of YD (Gt. CRYSTAL LAKE).

02.「Lost In Forever」Feat. Daniel McWhorter & Tyler Riley of GIDEON

This song is about time and eternity as if we could live forever. It’s a cycle of eternity that you could visualize as a circle and thus connected to the first song.

To build such a strong bond with people in a such amount of time makes the separation difficult.

03.「True North」Remix by Euphoric Wavism

This is a beautiful Remix of the song「True North」from the title album「True North」, released on 2016, November 30th.

「Euphoric Wavism」is headed by Tetsuya. His style is based mainly on Techno and House music. All his work was closely coordinated with domestic and international record labels. He supports many activities and was involved in several successful collaborations with CRYSTAL LAKE (Overcome -Dark Step Remix-, REMIX CD, The Circle Single「True North -Remix-」…).

[LIVE REPORT] 2018.06.17 CRYSTAL LAKE「SATANIC CARNIVAL 2018」@ Makuhari Messe, Tokyo (JP)

As one of the staple bands on the Japanese music scene, CRYSTAL LAKE went to tear it up at the「SATANIC CARNIVAL 2018」for the 4th time which is undoubtedly the most important one for the band who’s making his first steps on the main stage「SATAN STAGE」for the first time this year.

📸 Taka Tallman

CRYSTAL LAKE which has been successful in his own Festival「TRUE NORTH FESTIVAL」at Shinkiba Studio Coast (Check out my Live Report) and his first European Tour last year, is now driving the heavy and loud Japanese music scene.

On this second day of the festival, if there is a stage on which a booming metal formation should linger, it’s the so-called « band expected to turn ». I was a little nervous beforehand, ready for CRYSTAL LAKE at「SATAN STAGE」, hearing the whispers of attendees resonating in the big hall. CRYSTAL LAKE found a welcoming workplace where they could apply their talents, pursue their ambitions and make a truly valued contribution. CRYSTAL LAKE get to be on top of the metal game to lift the band to a new level. Right now, we are making history.

CRYSTAL LAKE started with「PROMETHEUS」, which was the last song they played last year at「SATANIC CARNIVAL 2017」to close their set at「EVIL STAGE」. Coincidence or not, it was a logical follow-on that this meaningful moment and the widening of their musical horizons should be reflected in their performance of the day.

As a leader, Ryo (Vo. CRYSTAL LAKE) pressed the audience, saying: « Raise your fists! Jump! Hands Up! ». Inspired and stimulated by this dynamic spirit, the audience defended the band’s interests all throughout the show.

« SATANIC, front to back, side to side, everybody, let’s fly! », screamed Ryo, stirring up the crowd, introducing the next song「Matrix」. In the middle of the song, IKEPY (Vo. HER NAME IN BLOOD) who just finished performing on「EVIL STAGE」, suddenly appeared as a guest to face Ryo, from headbanging to scream-singing, the confrontation brought a lot of excitement to the venue.

Then, fans planned the usual circle pit and mosh pit on the inevitable「Mercury」.

« I told you I was going to bring you here. Last year’s promise was realized today », said Ryo, welcomed by the cheers of people who are gathered here as a great reminder to our boys that fans will always be there to support them as they reach their dreams.

The words he uttered last year never left my mind until today. To have been part of this promise, to see CRYSTAL LAKE grow up and achieve that target one year later, that’s an incredible dream come true.

Although the visions vary and motivations differ, each of us finds the courage to follow a dream, each weaves passion and purpose into her everyday life, and each plants the seeds to grow a successful future.

Now, let’s raise the temperature with「Six Feet Under」followed by「Ups & Downs」. YD (Lead Gt. CRYSTAL LAKE) delivered a thick and heavy sound with a raw guitar that drives a wide array of deep, rich and aggressive tones that match the intensity of his playing style. From the very first note, we are carried away through a universe combining sharp riffs, heavy sounds, and emotional energy.

« In a close future, we will come back to bring you to「SATAN STAGE」again. We’re waiting for it! », said Ryo in his MC, full of hope and determination. Obviously,「Apollo」unleashed dramatic sound effects beyond the metalcore gender which shows a magnificent view making us feel like prisoners of an idealist universe and sanctuary Utopia.

In the last part, they performed both songs which are linked to each other,「Alpha」&「Omega」, before to end at the highest level with the brutal one「The Fire Inside」. Ryo‘s eyes rove through the pit to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.

However, CRYSTAL LAKE‘s set ended this way, it was therefore with a tremendous sense of relief, satisfaction, and optimism that we welcomed the performance. In spite of an audience still rather shy who mainly came to attend the event, there was no doubt that they profoundly touched the hearts of the people tonight. The most important thing to remember is: This is CRYSTAL LAKE.

Thank you to「SATANIC CARNIVAL」for allowing us to live incredible moments like those. This is the reason why I believe that「SATANIC CARNIVAL」is one of the best Music Festival in Tokyo. Congratulations to CRYSTAL LAKE for an amazing performance. See you again next year,「SATANIC CARNIVAL」.
